Half-year Round Up of CCARPH Activities

APRIL

Last April 26, Dr. Emma Porio, CCARPH Project Leader and Principal Investigator, was a reactor during the Inputs to the Legislative Agenda Setting for the 19th Congress. She gave a presentation on THE PHILIPPINE LEGISLATIVE AGENDA: Towards Climate and Disaster Resilience of our Cities and Communities for the 2nd Workshop of the event, with the theme Protecting the Environment and Adapting to Climate Change. Other speakers included Ms. Nieva Natural (Director, National Economic and Development Authority), Dr. Sonny Domingo (Senior Research Fellow, Philippine Institute for Development Studies), and Ms. Lea Guerrero (Executive Director, Greenpeace Philippines).

MAY

On May 19, a planning session was held in Arete’s Sandbox with a focus on the Proposed Program of Activities for CCARPH’s Urban Resilience Laboratory. The meeting, headed by Dr. Emma Porio, started with a “Creation Blessing” by Fr. Jojo Fung, SJ, an Assistant Professor of Systemic Theology from the Loyola School of Technology. Also in attendance were Dr. Ricky Abad (Artistic Director, Arete), Dr. Estelle Ladrido (Executive Director, Arete), Karlo Erfe (Arete Sandbox Assistant), and Luigi del Rosario (CCARPH Transdisciplinary Research Intern).

Last May 23-28, Dr. Emma Porio joined the Philippine Delegation for the UNDRR for the 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk and Reduction in Bali. You can read more about it here.


JUNE

Last June 29, Dr. Emma Porio spoke during the launch of the State of the Tropics Report by James Cook University. Her pre-recorded video touched upon some aspects of the experiences of Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic. CCARPH’s contribution to the report was a case study entitled “Community Resilience Innovations in Food Security and Risk Governance Systems: Towards Resilient Recovery from the Covid-19 Pandemic and Climate Disasters in the Philippines.” in which CCARPH partner, ICFP-Valenzuela City took center stage.


JULY

On July 4, the CCARPH-ADMU-AIC Team, led by Dr. Emma Porio, visited Pasig City’s RAVE Park to check on the Clean Water System (CWS) installation by the Ateneo Innovation Center. Mr. Patrick Plandiano headed the tour of the facility. Discussions followed regarding future science and technology plans as well as other possible collaborations. Afterwards, the team proceeded to Buklod Tao in San Mateo, Rizal to inspect and gain additional information on the CWS installed in their facility during lockdown. Other team members present were Engr Paul Cabacungan (AIC Operations Manager), Joy Rocamora (CCARPH Research Associate) and Alexandre Bardet (CCARPH Transdisciplinary Research Intern).

On July 5, Dr. Emma Porio was invited to provide a message during a courtesy meeting with Mayor Jaime Villanueva of the Municipality of Tiwi, Albay. The opening remarks and overview of the Adopt-A-Municipality Project in Tiwi were given by Ms. Marilou Erni, Executive Director of the National Resilience Council (NRC), while the closing remarks were provided by Mr. Sly Barrameda, NRC’s incoming Executive Director. Other speakers were Mr. Fred Dalumpines (Manager – Environment and DRR, Aboitiz Foundation Inc.) and Dr. Cedric Daep (Department Head, Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office).
